Virus Brief - MyDoom
The latest version of the MyDoom virus uses social engineering to get Windows users to infect themselves. Specifically, users receive an e-mail with an attachment that looks like it was sent from their e-mail administrator. If the user opens the attachment, the virus sends out copies of itself to addresses from the PC's address book. In addition, the virus opens a remote access port to the infected PC and can damage system files. The virus is also known as MyDoom.m, w32.mydoom.m@mm, MyDoom.l, MyDoom.n, and MyDoom.
If you receive MyDoom in your e-mail, do not open the attachment! The best way to prevent infection is to make sure your antivirus files are current. Most antivirus software companies have released updated signature files that detect and remove the virus. If you want to check whether your PC has the virus, Microsoft's website has a tool to detect the presence of the virus (http://www.microsoft.com/security/incident/mydoom.mspx).
